Embracing the Season We're In
“To everything there is a season.”
– Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Have you ever tried to pick fruit before it’s ripe? If so, you know that it completely resists your pull, and for a good reason — it’s not ready yet.
Recently, I was at one of my local farms and overheard a woman complaining to the farmer that strawberries were out of season.
“Are you sure you don’t have any?” “I really wanted to get some for my friend.” She sounded increasingly distressed as the farmer calmly replied, "No.”
I remembered seeing the farm's Facebook post in mid-August about strawberries and the last chance to get some, and I thought about buying a large bag to freeze.
I watched her try different negotiation tactics, perhaps hoping he had some tucked away.
What stood out to me was her inability to accept that she had missed the season and the frustration she was causing the farmer by not listening to him.
Right in front of her, there were all kinds of organic fall vegetables and fruits ready for the taking. She could make her friend a succulent apple pie or baked pears…
But she was still attached to the summer strawberries.
It made me think about how easy it is to miss the forest for the trees. Instead of dwelling on what we've missed or can’t control, we can shift our focus to what’s available and plentiful now and then enjoy discovering something new!
As the year winds down, I’m wrapping up a series of videos for Oak Bay Parks and Rec here in Victoria, and I'm committed to a special project for 2026. More on that as it unfolds.
Wishing you plenty for the season you’re in!
In appreciation for your being here,
Shana Lee
